Lash extension aftercare: how to make your set last
A great set of lashes can last three weeks or fall apart in one — and the difference is mostly aftercare. Here's the routine technicians wish every client followed.
The first 24–48 hours
The adhesive needs time to fully cure. Keep your lashes dry for at least 24 hours: no showers with hot steam on your face, no swimming, no saunas, and no sweaty workouts if you can avoid them.
Try not to touch or rub your eyes during this window — the bond is at its weakest right after application.
Clean your lashes daily
This is the step most people skip, and it's the most important. Oil, dead skin and makeup residue build up along the lash line and break down the adhesive — and can cause irritation or blepharitis.
Use an oil-free lash cleanser (or a gentle, lash-safe foaming cleanser) once a day. Apply with a soft brush, work along the lash line, rinse with cool water and pat — never rub — dry.
Sleep on your back (if you can)
Side and stomach sleepers crush their lashes against the pillow, which twists and sheds extensions unevenly. If you can't change position, a silk or satin pillowcase reduces friction, and a contoured sleep mask keeps pressure off the lashes.
Makeup rules
Skip mascara entirely — especially waterproof formulas, which are nearly impossible to remove without damaging extensions. If you must wear eyeliner, choose a water-based pen rather than a waxy pencil or gel pot.
Avoid oil-based makeup removers and cleansers around the eyes. Oil is the enemy of lash adhesive.
Brush them, don't pick them
Brush your lashes gently each morning with a clean spoolie to keep them fluffed and separated. Never pull or pick at a loose extension — you'll take your natural lash with it.
Book infills every 2–3 weeks
Your natural lashes shed on a cycle, taking extensions with them. Most people need an infill every 2–3 weeks to keep the set looking full. Wait longer than 4 weeks and most studios will charge for a full set instead.
